The motion data is free and available to use for any project. There is no use license, i.e. The data isn't under Creative Commons or a similar limited-use license. WHERE TO GET THE FILES: 1. The 3dsMax-friendly BVH release, main page, with download links: OR 2.
Both spreadsheet and word processor friendly index files are available. I welcome assistance from people who'd like to provide brief text descriptions of some of the motions which are presently poorly described, or not described at all. See the cgspeed.com release page for links to the motion index page, and you'll get an idea of what the current state of the motion text descriptions is like. Some are adequately described, others aren't. If you have questions, feel free to email me. Not sure whatever happened with Wiz's BVH exporters for Max and Blender. There's no mention of them on his blog. Just the youtube videos. Max 2013 is a bit over $4000, not $15000, and it does not export BVH. It can be imported for use with the Biped procedural animation system but there is no output. As disappointing as that is there's a reason for it and that's that BVH is an extremely limited and outdated format. Even SL doesn't actually use BVH.
- Index files: The release includes consolidated indices that list the motion filenames and their descriptions. Both spreadsheet and word processor friendly index files are available.
This is a large set of professionally-captured human motions of a wide variety of types, suitable for use in animation software, which were previously available only in Motionbuilder-friendly and Poser-friendly versions. Advantages of this release over the: - Very easy and fast to use with 3dsMax Biped. - Joint renaming: As many joints as possible have been renamed to be compatible with 3dsMax's BVH import capability for Biped. - Easy retargeting: since 3dsMax Biped allows biped-to-biped retargeting even across different Biped skeleton setups, it's now possible to use the CMU motion data with arbitrary Biped skeletons, at least within 3dsMax.

Blender is an excellent choice for SL content creation though and people who aren't already Max (or Maya, or SI) users should definitely use it over buying an expensive professional package if Second Life is all they want it for. I completely agree, one more thing I'd like to add. If it wasn't for programs like Max or Maya, Blender would be no where near as extended as it is right now. A lot of features and even some of the UI seem to be more or less copied from the commercial software. The rendering in cycles was used in the commercial products before it was introduced in Blender (Iray was available in 3ds max in early 2011) for example and the material editor looks suspiciously close to the one in Max.
I can then try to open a support ticket with MediaFire.) (' Missing directories'? Actually, the CMU dataset does not include a full set of directories numbered 1 through 144. There are some gaps in the numbering. For example, there are no motion directories numbered 95-101 or 129-130.
(.fbx) FBX animation files of Black Knight. (.c4d) Exo pilot from VG Infinity blade 3 + 40 animations. (.blend) 6 Animations included — Run, Walk, Attack, Hurt, Idle, and Die. (blender) Animations: Idle, Attack, Shield Block, Cheering, Death, Falling backwards, using pitchfork, using shovel, Holding Scythe, Walk. (blender) Animation armature (lame attempt @ walk cycle in the NLA editor).
Sorry about that. That's what I get for editing web pages at 2 AM. Re 'missing' directories: the CMU dataset doesn't include data in all directories numbered 1 through 144. In many cases, the data skips numbers. The canonical list of 'subject numbers' (aka folders) is at which will give you an idea of which folders of data simply don't exist. There are apparently still some 'issues' with upper leg positions on at least some of the converted clips due to the annoying BVH zero pose that CMU uses.

Great, thank you! And thank you!:) btw, There are a fey bugs in the file-list: zip10_14 point to zip1_9 zip30_34 points to zip20_29 (edit: as pointed out by Spacefrog earlier in this thread:) ) And folders 57, 58, 59, 95, 100, 101, 112 and 129 are missing in the download-link Edit: Thx again for making this available! I've dl-ed all available zips and these are the folder that are missing, or maybe they are not included by default, either way. Here is a list: 4,10,11,12,13,14,30,31,32,34, 50,51,42,53,57,58,59,65,67,68, 71,72,92,95,96,97,98,99,100,101, 109,110,112,116,119,129,130. Bad download links fixed now, I believe.
One could say the same for Open Office vs MS Office and Photoshop vs Gimp. This means two things: For a good development of the free software there's a need for commercial counterparts, breaking new grounds and it means the commercial product is usually one step ahead, both in adding features and in getting rid of bugs.
Although the clip I used for the video tutorial looks fine to me. If the upper leg rotations for any given clip end up at an annoying angle after import into Max, I believe it should be possible to use Max's 'Apply Increment' feature on a clip-by-clip basis to correct.

Both spreadsheet and word processor friendly index files are available. This means that you don't just get a pile of 2548.bvh files where you don't know anything about the motions. Almost every.bvh file has a text description, and those descriptions are all in a single reference file that you can print or sort.
The motion files can be downloaded from (You will also be able to find some of the tools used for the batch conversions and motion files lists. REMEMBER, the files can be used for commercial projects but cannot be resold. Not my rule, but the owners.
Many are aware of the free motion libraries available online: the Carnegie Mellon University Library - - (2548 files), its Kitchen Challenge - -, the ACCAD Motion Capture Lab Library - - (635), the EYES JAPAN library - - (340 files) and the Motion Capture Club motions - - (1 Four Arms file, 18 dog motions, 63 facial expressions and 461 biped motions ). The biggest issue with this files is the format (ie: c3d) and hard to manage skeletons.
But what few know is that these database have been converted in bip and max for 3DS Max, mb for Maya, iMotion for iClone and bvh, dae and fbx for various other softwares. Except for the Motion Capture Club facial expressions which are only in fbx (Motion Builder).
[Please forward or repost this notice as desired, since I don't necessarily know the best way to let a lot of 3dsMax users know that this new BVH conversion is available.] I'm pleased to announce a 3dsMax-Biped-friendly BVH release of the Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU) motion database. Last year I released a Motionbuilder-friendly version of the data, but because Motionbuilder tends to be a specialized tool and I recently switched to Max anyway, I decided that instead of having a life, I'd invest some research and programming time to convert the dataset to something easily usable with Biped.
So you need to convert this asf or amc to bvh format using which will help you to import them in Poser or Blender or other BVH supporting Character animation softwares. If you think its a big process to convert thousands of file, then go to which contains all files converted to BVH format from CMU,all free for downloading. 3 comments: on September 5, 2008 at 11:33 AM said. Does anyone have any tips on optimising POSER figures for the CMU mocap files? I tried renaming some of the bones in V4.2 which solved some of the mismatches. But the shoulders remain a problem and seem to cause the arms to fold back into the torso with many of the CMU mocap files. Mbs42 on September 10, 2008 at 2:58 PM said.

- T-poses: Every BVH file has a T-pose added as its new first frame. The T-pose faces the positive Z axis and therefore is MotionBuilder compatible. - Joint renaming: As many joints as possible have been renamed to be compatible with MotionBuilder's joint naming conventions. This renaming makes it much easier (faster) to use the BVH files in MotionBuilder. - Index/information files: The release includes consolidated indexes that list the motion filenames and their descriptions.
Except for the Motion Capture Club facial expressions which are only in fbx (Motion Builder). More than 4000 files in different formats, now that's got to be the biggest motion database online.

I've also recorded a training video to show how to import the files and retarget them to another Max Biped. In the wake of the initial BVH release of the Motionbuilder-friendly version in 2008, various people have done different types of conversions and published them. So there's now a Poser-capable version, and apparently also versions saved as Collada (.dae), Maya Binary (.mb), iClone (.vns) and more, though I haven't tested any of these. I have links to the various releases on the top-level cgspeed.com motion capture page.
- MotionBuilder-friendly: the joint renaming and the addition of the T-pose make it possible to use these motions for animation retargetting within MotionBuilder in seconds rather than minutes. Advantages of this release over the original Carnegie-Mellon data: - Very easy and fast to use with 3dsMax Biped. This is a huge win, because it means that you don't have to create a skeleton whose bone setup matches that of the original CMU data.
