Special Smash is a term that refers to several types of versus modes available in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Starting with, yet another special move was added, the, which can be accessed when the is obtained. When obtained, the standard special move is then replaced with the Final Smash that usually does a very high damaging attack that can affect more than one person, but it can only be used once before obtaining another Smash Ball. With the introduced in, there are three options for each character's special moves (effectively meaning 12 move options per character). For example, 's neutral special,, can be replaced with either Lick or Egg Launch. In, character customization is limited to, and so only they have access to custom specials. However, some characters have previous custom specials integrated into their default special moveset from the transition from Smash 4 to Ultimate. For example, ’s side special is now (replacing, which has merged with her down special), and her mobility has been significantly buffed to compensate for losing access to.

Some criticisms in the 3DS version include a lack of single-player modes and issues concerning the 3DS hardware, such as the size of characters on the smaller screen when zoomed out and latency issues during both local and online multiplayer. There were also reports of players damaging their 3DS Circle Pads while playing the game excessively. The Wii U version's online play quality was mildly criticized for some inconsistency, but has overall been critically acclaimed. Daniel Dischoff of stated 'It's true that Super Smash Bros. Evolves every time with regard to new features, items, and characters to choose from. While your favorite character may not return or a few annoying pickups may force you to turn off items altogether, this represents the biggest leap forward Smashers have seen yet.'
