NOTE: Steam Link and NVIDIA Shield TV does not have same controller compatibility on Steam streaming. Here is my list for Shield TV in case more than me own that too and use it for Steam. Since you didn't provide any details on how you installed your RetroPie system, I suggested you upgrade your kernel to get the latest version. Seems that it didn't work with the latest kernel. I ran rpi-update command and after that jstest /dev/input/js0 still didn't indicate anything for Y axis. Or it did but same values like pressing D-Pad up and down. I would like to know is there anything I can do for that controllers joystick setup. Seems that when its using udev driver and even updating kernel it wont' help. After the kernel update, should I remove controllers config files to make sure it won't use old ones?

Hi, Seems that disucssion about 'DragonRise Inc Generic USB joystick' been active about year ago. I bought N64 controller and everything else works OK but joystick Y axis is doing the same that pressing D-Pad up and down. It's playable but hard to play when the values are max when trying to move peacefully or sneak in the game.:) jstest indicated that D-Pad are 0 and 1 and joystick is 2 when moving X direction. There's no value for Y at all or there is but it's same that pressing D-Pad up and down (0 and 1). I edited controller's config file and now X axis works OK, but Y axis is impossible to get it work because there's no value just for Y, atleast what jstest says.

However you may want to get [1] and calibrate the analog sticks (if any) and maybe write an udev rule to restore the calibration every time you plug that gamepad. It seems you get what you pay for and linearity is not very good for cheap gamepads.

Are both of these controllers just faulty? Is there some configuration I can tweak to get the y-axis on the analog stick to react properly to small moves?

Reportedly this problem does not exist in Windows, although I am experiencing it on mac using both Joystick and Gamepad Tester and Controllers Lite (can't confirm the duplication, can confirm the input Axis being used), and haven;t been able to confirm. My question is- is this a driver issue, or is there something physically wrong with these controllers? I have two and both operate in a similar manner.

At first, this did nothing. I realized that another entry, Retrolink USB clone, had a conflicting name 'Generic USB joystick' which was overwriting all the configs into mupen64plus.cfg. Now that I removed that block, I am getting ramping in-game in the x-direction, and mupen64plus.cfg seems to now agree with InputAutoCfg.ini.

I ran jstest /dev/input/js0, and I noticed axes 0 and 1 are working for the D-pad 0 --> +/-32767. When using the analog stick, I get the same behavior as the D-pad on axes 0 and 1, and axis 2 ramps up and down in the x-direction.

Hello, I have a USB pcb controller card that is recognized by OpenEmu and MAME OS X 0.135 (configured within the MAME application). The pcb connects an arcade Sanwa stick and buttons to a Mac. Retroarch doesn’t seem to play nice with it, not recognizing any inputs from the stick. The OS X system profiler lists the device as shown down below. So I am on to something here, but I still cannot explain why the y-direction is not ramping in jstest, and thus, in-game. I have 2 of these controllers and they both act the same way.

My understanding is that there are driver issues, further work may need to be done reverse engineering the devices, they have never worked 100% and recently got worse. There have been no developments for the drivers for many years, but there are a few mentions of this problem in 2015 (Youtube, Debian bug) so perhaps Steam is helping draw attention to these devices. I found jstest-gtk a nice utility when checking these things out, my experiences with Xbox compatible controllers is very good, but I'm looking for a more PSX style one myself.
