If you like more pictures I would be happy to email them. The tires are 26' and are marked Allstate Crusader. The back tire has air in it. The front tire is flat. I do not have an air compressor so I am not sure if it would hold air. They do look old enough to be original to the bicycle.

Most of the original fuel lines were 3/16' copper tubing with flared fittings. On my original motor when I re-plumbed it, I put a new valve at the Ell coming from the carburetor, a more convenient and much neater arrangement. If you replace the 3/16' copper fuel line, be sure to put a filter in the line, I suggest you do so with 1/4' ID automotive Neoprene fuel line, use fittings that are 1/4' that are barbed ends which allows the the Neoprene to be a tight slide fit.

Sears bicycles sold before World War II were branded as Elgin, and after World War II as J.C. An excellent book containing catalog pages from the 30’s through the 60’s is available. Click here to find one on eBay. Search eBay for Elgin bicycles and parts. Search eBay for J.C. Higgins bicycles and parts. Some bicycles used model numbers as well as serial numbers, others (like Schwinn) did not. For the majority of old bicycles, alas there are no complete serial number records, including for Schwinns prior to 1948 (due to a fire at Schwinn–this part of the story is repeated a jillion times on the internet).

This head gasket material would also be used to make a new power-head to leg (exhaust housing) gasket because of the high heat generated at that area. In the photo below on the left is a method of making your own gaskets from commercial gasket material with a small ball pein hammer. The use of an even smaller ball pein hammer (4 oz) that has a small rounded knob facilitates marking the holes. Tap the gasket material with the regular end of the head when doing the flats then the rounded knob of the hammer just enough to either cut the material against the metal part or at least mark it so that it can be cleaned up with a sharp knife or scissors. For either material but at least the heavier like the head gasket using a hole punch makes a neater cut for the bolt holes. Hole punches in 1/4' and 1/2' work about right.

After careful investigation, I am considering modifying the water exhaust to incorporate a couple of 3/16' OD copper tubes carefully drilled & threaded using a 10-32 thread into the lower water jacket of the cylinder. And extending them possibly 1 1/2' into the upper leg housing with a couple of side holes drilled to spray outward & down enough so as to not allow any of this water to get back up into the exhaust ports of the cylinder. If it doesn't work, then just a 10-32 plug screw returns it back to original. I would leave the original overboard water indicator intact, as it appears these motors have a very generous cooling system.

Nothing emotional involved here. Not long ago we had some chap on eBay start to give us a long rundown on how the bicycle he found was worth more in parts than to sell it whole–even though it was a beautiful original. He had dollar figures (some pretty outrageous) for each and every part on the bicycle.and yes–OMG!–then proceeded to piranha what was once a rare and beautiful original survivor.

Spokespersons for such outfits made things worse by repeating the incorrect date.or making up others. Publications did the same, picking up on the lead of the famous museum. Even the venerable, prestigious Smithsonian bought into the hysteria and boldly published (despite our direct advice to the contrary) a date of '1979' in their September, 1996 issue of SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE. AND THIS article made it on the internet! (To this date, the SMITHSONIAN has defiantly refused to correct their silly error, oddly stating it unimportant and 'purist' to do so.that we'd have to 'agree to disagree'). And you thought the almighty Smithsonian–the god of antiquities–knew it all?

Pin, but given the obsolescence of parts for this motor and low hp rating, I would rather opt for a safety factor here by using a smaller 1/8' dia. X 1 1/4'long shear pin. I like to make mine from brazing rod used for Oxy/Acetylene welding, they are tough, do shear quite well and won't rust. The original propeller had some small pitting of from 1/16' to 1/8' in dia.

After my automotive parts house made a couple of phone calls, they came up with another maker who's number was MA1204TV that did cross reference. The bearing is sold in 2 parts, the number mentioned for the outer race and caged roller bearings with the inner race sold separately if needed. For this installation only the outer race and roller unit is needed. However this bearing is normally stocked only in regional warehouses. Price is a bit spendy as it retails for about $65.00. The bronze bearings, both top and bottom were still in good enough shape to utilize. To remove this roller main bearing takes a special driver tool as the bearing is pressed into the housing with no provision to get behind it with a puller.
